Frequently Asked Questions
Here you will find answers to some of the questions we receive most frequently. Questions about our program and stances can be found on the “Beyond the Wahl-O-Mat” page.
General
All DiEM25 parties bear the name MERA25 in order to present a united front across Europe. The word “diem” (as in the proverb “Carpe diem”) means “day” in Latin and “mera” is the same in Greek.
What is the difference between DiEM25 and MERA25 and the Progressive International?
DiEM25 is a movement, MERA25 is a party (or one party per country; European law does not yet provide for the possibility of registering a party on a transnational basis), and the Progressive International is a global association of many very different left-wing movements, parties, associations, trade unions and media.
European, local and national. Activists from all over Europe work together virtually at DiEM25. Locally, we meet in local groups. Working groups take care of the content and organisational work. Participate!
What distinguishes MERA25 and DiEM25 from other parties and movements?
-
Our fundamental thinking. We have the courage to ask the big questions and provide rebellious, radical and realistic answers.
- Expertise in content. Our working groups are inquisitive and keen to discuss. They know the details without getting lost in them. Find out how you can help.
-
Our European and internationalist roots. We are closely connected with our comrades in Europe and around the world to fight together for democracy and shared, sustainable prosperity.

I have read your programme. How are you going to pay for all this?
We believe that the state has many more financial opportunities than are currently being utilised. An outdated, false image of our monetary system prevents us from properly tackling major problems such as the housing shortage, low pensions or the climate crisis, and we want to use a modern, enabling monetary policy to realise our political goals. We are facing major challenges – but a shortage of money is not one of them.
Here you can find out more about our money and spending policy.
Where can I meet you in person?
You can either simply come to a meeting – you can find all the dates here. Or you can find out how you can join us here. We look forward to seeing you!
Either with you on site, or in terms of content or organisation.

New members
How much time is typically expected of members each week or month?
Your time commitment is completely flexible and up to you. You can just stay connected with no time commitment, or attend meetings on an ad-hoc basis, or get actively involved in working groups, which typically require more commitment per week. You’re also welcome to join demonstrations and actions whenever it suits you—it’s a great way to connect with others and show your support!
How does the membership support the goals and initiatives of MERA25/DiEM25?
Your membership helps fund the organization, connects you with like-minded individuals, and offers opportunities to participate in various activities. Members actively contribute to shaping policies, organizing actions, and benefit from personal growth opportunities along the way.
Do I need to speak German to become a member?
No. We hold meetings and communicate in both English and German, and many other languages are represented within our membership. It is decided based on the language preferences of those present.
How much is the membership fee?
As a party, we do not accept donations from companies, ensuring our complete independence. That’s why membership fees are crucial to our organization.
For MERA25 membership, each member selects a contribution level based on their income. The available standard contribution levels are €72, €48, and €36 per year, €24 per year or €12 per year. The membership fee can be paid annually or in monthly installments and can be reduced, based on individual circumstances.
Additionally, we encourage you to pay a DiEM25 membership to support the international level of the organisation. DiEM25 membership fees start at €25 per year.
Transparent finances are very important to us, which is why we publish our financial reports here.
How are the memberships of DiEM25 and MERA25 different?
Membership in DiEM25 is a prerequisite for joining MERA25 — as a MERA25 member, you are automatically a member of DiEM25. Like this we make sure that MERA25 stays a part of our international movement DiEM25. However, it is possible to be a member of DiEM25 without being part of MERA25.
Do I need to become a German citizen to become a member?
No, German citizenship is not required to be a member of MERA25. All MERA25 members, including non-German citizens, are allowed to vote on all decisions by MERA25.
According to German law, only citizens of Germany are allowed to be a part of the candidates list for the German federal and state elections.
Only citizens of the European Union are allowed to be candidates for European parliament and municipal elections.
