MERA25 Policy Programme — For Vision and Responsibility
Our goals are realistic, rebellious, and radical. They go deeper than the visionless and irresponsible politics of small steps. They go beyond the usual proposals, because those proposals fall short.
But our goals are not just deeper, they breathe a new, fresh spirit, because our heart beats European and internationalist. We are an inseparable part of the European movement DiEM25 and the Progressive International.
This programme is the foundation of our work. It is a development of our policy programme from 13 November 2021, which we revised in thematic working groups and adopted at the 2024 federal members’ assembly. Thank you to everyone whose time went into the lively discussions on content, the editing, and the design.
Nothing in it should be set in stone, except the values that underpin it. We want to keep listening, learning, and discussing — with you.
The first chapter is about money. We explain how we can finance a first-class social system, climate action, and excellent infrastructure. Why does this matter? Without massively increased public spending there will be no energy and mobility transition, no secure pensions, no affordable housing, no reliable health system — in short: no shared prosperity for the…
We face existential crises: rapid global heating (the climate crisis), rapid loss of species (the biodiversity crisis), social polarisation, and a worldwide resurgence of anti-democratic and warmongering politics. None of the established parties has a convincing plan to solve these crises. That’s why we have developed a Green New Deal that matches the scale of the challenges. Why is…
This is about social security: pensions, housing, health, care, equality, and work. Our goal is to guarantee everyone a first-class, future-proof social system that supports people in shaping their lives, without generating profits. Why does this matter? Because the public social system is the foundation of our society. It should…
We want Germany to become a peaceful, open, safe country for everyone. We see Europe as a space for peace and progress. Global justice and internationalism are, for us, the foundation of our survival. Why does this matter? Because many people in Germany still live in great insecurity. Because at the…
This is about how we can achieve and sustain an open, diverse society that is inclusive for everyone. And it is about how we want to deal with discrimination and group-based hatred. We see diversity as an opportunity that should be allowed to flourish in many forms, especially in public spaces. To…
Central areas of society such as the banking system or the internet should belong to all of us, not to a wealthy elite. We want democracy in every area of life. This chapter also covers commons like education and culture. We want to support them, protect them, and give them space to develop. Why does this matter? Because…
This chapter is about democracy. We want people to be able to live together freely and without coercion. For that, every person must be able to take part in decisions that affect them. And every voice must count equally. Why does this matter? Worldwide there is a neo-feudal trend —…
Today’s EU is deeply undemocratic. The course of European politics is not set by parliaments, but by an unelected Brussels elite of neoliberal technocrats, bankers, and economic oligarchs, plus thousands of lobbyists. Political decisions are taken behind closed doors and pulled out of the democratic process by being declared “non-political”, “purely technical”, or “without alternative”. The price of this depoliticisation…
