Here you will find answers to some of the questions we receive most frequently. Questions about our programme and stances can be found on the “Beyond the Wahl-O-Mat” page.
General
Why the name MERA25?
All DiEM25 parties bear the name MERA25 in order to present a united front across Europe. The word “diem” (as in the proverb “Carpe diem”) means “day” in Latin, and “mera” is the same in Greek.
What is the difference between DiEM25, MERA25, and the Progressive International?
DiEM25 is a movement, MERA25 is a party (or one party per country — European law does not yet provide for the possibility of registering a party on a transnational basis), and the Progressive International is a global association of many very different left-wing movements, parties, associations, trade unions, and media.
How are you organised?
European, local, and national. Activists from all over Europe work together virtually at DiEM25. Locally, we meet in local groups. Working groups take care of the content and organisational work. Get involved.
What sets MERA25 and DiEM25 apart from other parties and movements?
- Our fundamental thinking. We have the courage to ask the big questions and provide rebellious, radical, and realistic answers.
- Expertise in content. Our working groups are inquisitive and keen to discuss. They know the details without getting lost in them. Find out how you can help.
- Our European and internationalist roots. We are closely connected with our comrades in Europe and around the world to fight together for democracy and shared, sustainable prosperity.
What do you want to do for me?
- We want to guarantee you a job in your city or town. Fairly paid, full or part-time, no application necessary.
- We want to guarantee you a secure, decent pension so you are protected in old age.
- We want to guarantee you affordable, secure housing — without rising rents and without owner-occupancy evictions.

I have read your programme. How are you going to pay for all this?
We believe that the state has many more financial possibilities than are currently being used. An outdated, false image of our monetary system prevents us from properly tackling major problems such as the housing shortage, low pensions, and the climate crisis. We want to use a modern, enabling monetary policy to realise our political goals. We are facing major challenges — but a shortage of money is not one of them.
You can read more about our money and spending policy here.
Where can I meet you in person?
You can simply come to a meeting — find all the dates here. Or find out how you can get involved. We look forward to seeing you!
How can I actively support you?
Either locally, on content, or in organisational matters.
- Organisational matters or general questions: send an email to [email protected]
- Locally: just come to a meeting of our local groups. Find all the groups here. No group near you yet? Send us an email: [email protected]
- Content: you can contribute to the development of the programme. Send us an email to join a working group: [email protected]

Will I receive a donation receipt?
Yes, we will be happy to issue you a donation receipt — please contact us at [email protected]. You can declare amounts up to €200 in your tax return without a receipt.
What happens to my donations?
With your donations we can order materials, pay for room hire, reimburse travel costs, and buy software. In the medium term, we also want to set up a small office team to support volunteers. Once a year we prepare a financial report in which income and expenditure are listed transparently. Please support us with a donation if you can.

New members
How much time is typically expected of members each week or month?
Your time commitment is completely flexible and up to you. You can stay connected with no fixed commitments, attend meetings on an ad-hoc basis, or get actively involved in working groups, which typically require more commitment per week. You’re also welcome to join demonstrations and actions whenever it suits you — it’s a great way to connect with others and show your support.
How does membership support the goals and initiatives of MERA25/DiEM25?
Your membership helps fund the organisation, connects you with like-minded people, and offers opportunities to participate in various activities. Members actively contribute to shaping policies, organise actions, and benefit from personal growth opportunities along the way.
Do I need to speak German to become a member?
No. We hold meetings and communicate in both English and German, and many other languages are represented within our membership. The language is decided based on the preferences of those present.
How much is the membership fee?
As a party, we do not accept donations from companies, ensuring our complete independence. That’s why membership fees are crucial to our organisation.
For MERA25 membership, each member chooses a contribution level based on their income. The available standard contribution levels are €72, €48, and €36 per year, €24 per year, or €12 per year. The membership fee can be paid annually or in monthly instalments and can be reduced based on individual circumstances.
MERA25 members should also support DiEM25 (the international level) with a contribution where possible. The minimum DiEM25 contribution is €25 per year.
Transparent finances are very important to us, which is why we publish our financial reports here.
How do the DiEM25 and MERA25 memberships differ?
Membership in DiEM25 is a prerequisite for joining MERA25 — as a MERA25 member, you are automatically a member of DiEM25. This way we make sure that MERA25 stays a part of our international movement DiEM25. However, it is possible to be a member of DiEM25 without being part of MERA25.
Do I need German citizenship to become a member?
No. German citizenship is not required to be a member of MERA25. All MERA25 members, including non-German citizens, may vote on all decisions taken by MERA25.
According to German law, however, only German citizens are allowed to be on the candidate lists for the German federal and state elections.
For European and municipal elections, only citizens of the European Union may stand as candidates.
